In a remote Siberian bunker, scientist Sergei faces intense pressure from his corrupt commander, Tumerov, to surrender critical chemical weapons codes. In a desperate act for leverage, he releases what he assumes is a weak, outdated virus into the base’s water supply. Instead, the virus mutates rapidly, turning soldiers into fast, violent, zombie-like infected. The base collapses within hours. Sergei seals himself inside as Tumerov and other officials escape by helicopter—unknowingly carrying the outbreak to the outside world, igniting a terrifying zombie apocalypse story that will change everything.
In Phoenix, Arizona, telecommuter Joe, his wife Jules, and their son Colton watch the crisis unfold through alarming news reports and online footage, sensing a cover-up as panic spreads. They rush to stock up on supplies. Meanwhile, across town, metalworker Rick wakes to chaos when his bitten Aunt Joan turns and kills his grandmother. Forced to take drastic action, he discovers that only head trauma can stop the infected, and he fortifies his home for survival.
Joe’s defenses eventually succumb to a massive swarm of infected. His family narrowly escapes, surviving a rooftop siege at a sporting goods store before fleeing across neighboring buildings. Meanwhile, Rick abandons his collapsing neighborhood, upgrading to a Class C RV and reinforcing it with heavy metal armor at a fabrication shop. He rescues a young woman, Connie, and together they fight through hordes of infected and hostile survivors, determined to escape the city.
Both parties head toward the same refuge: a fortified home with a hidden bunker in Fountain Hills owned by Joe’s Aunt Clara. Joe’s family barely makes it, their SUV dying just short of the house after evading a local gang. Rick and Connie arrive as well after their own brutal journey.
The reunited survivors find the bunker intact—but Aunt Clara is gone, apparently injured. Their relief is short-lived as the gang Joe encountered operates nearby and now knows someone is in the house. The group is safe underground—for the moment—but their next threat isn’t mindless; it’s organized, armed, and human, pushing them further into this gripping survival fiction.
